Home Care Instructions
The root canal treated tooth may be sore or and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for 24-48 hours to up to 7-days. Typically, patients who report pain the day after the procedure notice that the pain subsides thereafter. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm.
Do not chew food on the affected side for at least 24 hours or as directed by Dr. Jain. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen.
Ibuprofen 800mg in combination with OTC Tylenol (325mg/500mg) with meals is generally the most effective pain medication (taken every 6-8 hours). Starting in 2018, the state of California has started enforcing much stricter regulations regarding prescribing of narcotic/opioid medications such as hydrocodone or codeine, and these medications will only be prescribed in rare circumstances.
If swelling occurs in your face after the root canal, please call us back immediately for an antibiotic prescription.
NOTE: Alcohol intake is not advised while taking any of these medications. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact this office immediately.
The office telephone is answered day and night. If you need to call after hours, please have your pharmacy number available.
